There’s arguably no better way to get the Spanish football season underway than with another edition of El Clasico
Supercopa de España Final, Game 1
Today, 21:00 BST
Camp Nou, Barcelona

El Clasico is arguably the biggest game in world football, Barcelona and Real Madrid will go head-to-head in the Supercopa de España. Tonight’s game will give Barcelona the opportunity of winning their third consecutive game against Zinadine Zidane’s Real Madrid. The Spanish giants met in a recent pre-season friendly and on that occasion Barcelona came out on top in a 3-2 win.
Ernesto Valverde will get his Barcelona managerial reign underway in at the deep end. Valverde’s task is not only to try and put the Neymar situation behind the club, but he has to halt the momentum-shift towards the Bernabeu. The Barcelona trident will look unfamiliar. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are likely to be joined by Gerard Deulofeu in attack. Deulofeu who recently arrived from Everton is a product of the Barcelona acadamy. Thomas Vermaelen and Rafinha are both doubts for the hosts.
Valverde has stated that Barcelona are able to cope without Neymar.
“I like the understanding between Deulofeu with (Jordi) Alba and (Lionel) Messi, but we only have one reference point, the Gamper (trophy) against Chapecoense.” Ernersto Valverde via as.com.
Zidane has won an impressive haul of trophies at Real Madrid. The board have rewarded him with a three-year contract extention. Madrid were not in great form during the pre-season but their recent UEFA Super Cup win demonstrates that they know how to win when it counts. Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in tonights game could be limited to 45 minutes. Zidane has options up front but Gareth Bale may have to be content with a substitutes role. Luka Modric is unavailable for tonight’s game due to suspension.
A global audience will tune in to watch the two best players in World Football. Who will steal the show, Messi or Ronaldo?
