Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Jordan Rhodes on a permanent deal
Jordan Rhodes has the quality required to spearhead Sheffield Wednesday’s return back to the Premier League. The 2016/17 season was arguably his most frustrating to date. The 27-year-old didn’t have the best of times at Middlesbrough, where he found himself frozen out the squad for long periods. Wednesday brought him in on loan halfway through the season, a positive move for both club and player but he struggled to find top-form. Rhodes shouldn’t be judged on his return of three goals and three assists for The Owls just yet. The club struggled to get the best out of the Scotland international, a situation that must be addressed.
Looking forward, the focus should switch from a negative to a positive and how to get the best out of the striker. Rhodes will undoubtedly flourish from the type of service he was accustomed to at Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town before that. The Wednesday faithful will be eager to see Rhodes return to the kind of form that earned him a move to the Premier League.
Rhodes has certainly got the credentials at Championship level, but is he a guaranteed starter under Carlos Carvalhal? He will have to fight hard for his place in the side, especially with Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher and Sam Winnall in the ranks. Wednesday have been searching for a 20 plus goal-a-season striker for a long time. Will a refreshed Rhodes get a regular run in the team? Will he rediscover the kind of form required to kick Sheffield Wednesday on to a top-two finish? Only time will tell.
