Jürgen Klopp’s inclusion in Nicol’s top 5 managers sparks twitter reaction
Ex-Liverpool midfield Steve Nicol picked his top-five managers for ESPNFC. Zinadine Zidane, Carlo Ancelloti, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola all featured. There’s nothing wrong with that I hear you say. It was the fifth manager on that list that caused a stir on twitter when Liverpool gaffer Jürgen Klopp appeared on the list.
Fans reacted by questioning the omission of Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino. Nicol’s view is a subjective one but those who questioned his decision to add Klopp may have a valid point. It’s easy to see why Pochettino wasn’t included. The Spurs gaffer is trying to assemble a title-winning team but to date his efforts have fallen short of success.
Mourinho’s exclusion is a different conversation altogether. The Manchester United head-coach is well-known for his strong opinions and ability to ‘park the bus’, however it is Mourinho’s track record that stands him out from the rest. League titles in Portugal, England, Spain and Italy are the foundations for a managerial CV that is the envy of many. The ‘Special One’ is not to everyone’s liking but he knows how to get results. His time at Manchester United is testament to that, where he recently won the Europa League and that shouldn’t be underestimated.
I’m sure none of the world’s top managers will lose any sleep over Nicol’s list. If it served a purpose to generate contrasting opinions, it worked.
