Auf Wiedersehen Germany: Reaction

Germany are dumped out of the World Cup

A fine performance by South Korea put an end to Germany’s miserable challenge on football’s greatest prize. A video assistant referee decision deep into injury time looked to have given the Koreans a 1-0 win, scored by Kim Young-gwon’s, but they weren’t finished. The goal was originally ruled out for offside. Manuel Neuer decided to take matters into his own hands by venturing into midfield. Son Heung-min wrapped it up on 96 minutes with a tap-in. Germany have been eliminated from the group stages for the first time since 1938.

Germany were tipped as one of the favourites to win the 2018 World Cup but talk can be cheap. The current World Champions are heading home after finishing bottom of Group F.  Ponderous is one of many adjectives that apply to Germany’s World Cup performances. The writing was on the wall for Joachim Löw’s side. Mexico got stuck into Die Mannschaft from the off, Manuel Neuer and company looked like a shadow of the side that triumphed in Brazil four years ago. In 2018 they were simply embarrassed.

Questions will be asked about Löw’s squad selection and tactics. Leroy Sané! Germany made five changes to the side that faced Sweden. The DFB will have to make a decision as to whether or not they are going to stick with their man.
